Don’t Travel Alone – Day 6

Devotional - Seeking Advise

Proverbs 12:15 states, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.” In life, we often face crossroads where decisions must be made—whether in relationships, career, or faith. A fool rushes ahead without seeking wisdom, relying solely on personal feelings or desires. However, true wisdom is shown when we seek godly advice and humbly accept guidance. The Bible warns in Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” Our emotions can deceive us, and what feels right in the moment may ultimately lead to destruction.

The difference between success and failure often lies in the counsel we receive. Proverbs 15:22 reminds us, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Whether in marriage, finances, parenting, school or work, we need wise mentors who can help us make godly choices. Pride, however, can prevent us from seeking advice, as Proverbs 13:10 warns, “Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.” When we reject advice out of stubbornness or fear of correction, we risk making costly mistakes.

God’s Word must be the foundation of the advice we seek. Paul warned in 2 Timothy 4:3-4 that many would turn away from sound doctrine, seeking teachers who say what they want to hear. Instead, we should seek spiritual guidance from mature disciples who speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Moses heeded Jethro’s advice and found relief (Exodus 18:24), whereas Jehoshaphat suffered defeat by listening to unspiritual counselors (1 Kings 22:1-6). We must be careful not to fall into common pitfalls—seeking advice merely for approval, withholding critical details, or delaying guidance until it is too late.

Prayer

Father, give me the humility to seek and accept wise counsel. Help me to recognize when my own understanding is limited and to lean on Your Word for direction. Surround me with godly advisers who will speak truth into my life, even when it is difficult to hear. Keep me from the trap of pride, and let my heart be open to Your guidance. May I strive not just for what is acceptable, but for what is best, bringing glory to You in all my decisions. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Scripture

Proverbs 12:15

15 The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.

Proverbs 15:22

22 Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

2 Timothy 4:1-4

1 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

1 Corinthians 10:23-24

23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

1 Kings 22:1-6

1 For three years there was no war between Aram and Israel. 2 But in the third year Jehoshaphat king of Judah went down to see the king of Israel. 3 The king of Israel had said to his officials, “Don’t you know that Ramoth Gilead belongs to us and yet we are doing nothing to retake it from the king of Aram?” 4 So he asked Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to fight against Ramoth Gilead? Jehoshaphat replied to the king of Israel, “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” 5 But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “First seek the counsel of the Lord.” 6 So the king of Israel brought together the prophets—about four hundred men—and asked them, “Shall I go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?” “Go,” they answered, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.

Colossians 1:28-29

28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.
