MyJourney - MyJourney | Next Steps
As followers of Christ, we are called to excellence—not just in our spiritual lives, but in every aspect of our journey, including academics. It can be tempting to view schoolwork as a distraction from evangelism or church involvement, but the truth is, our studies are a God-given responsibility. Neglecting academics can lead to a loss of discipline, character, and credibility. Instead of seeing school as a burden, we should view it as an opportunity to glorify God through diligence and perseverance. As 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 reminds us, God has placed us in our current roles for a purpose, and that includes being a light in our academic pursuits.
Our attitude towards academics can either hinder or enhance our spiritual growth. Colossians 3:22-23 teaches that our work should be done for God, not just for ourselves. This mindset transforms studying from a mundane task into an act of worship. When we approach academics with integrity and consistency, we become an evangelistic example to those around us. 1 Thessalonians 4:11 encourages us to lead a quiet and diligent life, which speaks volumes to our peers. Just as Jesus amazed people with His excellence in all things (Mark 7:37), we too can inspire others through our commitment to both faith and scholarship.
Diligence in academics also plays a role in our spiritual formation. James 1:2-4 reminds us that perseverance produces maturity and completeness. The challenges we face in school—difficult subjects, exams, and deadlines—are opportunities to build endurance, discipline, and faith. These qualities will not only help us succeed in our studies but will also strengthen our walk with God. Proverbs 6:6 encourages us to learn from the diligence of the ant, emphasizing the importance of preparation and hard work.
To thrive academically and spiritually, we must be intentional about our approach. Seeking guidance from mentors, professors, and classmates can provide valuable insight. Attending every lecture, taking good notes, and staying organized are simple yet effective ways to maintain excellence. Above all, prioritizing rest and managing time wisely will allow us to honor God with our studies. As we commit to both academic and spiritual growth, we will find that our education is not an obstacle, but an incredible opportunity to glorify God.
Lord, help me to see my academics as a calling rather than a burden. Give me the discipline to work diligently, the wisdom to seek help when needed, and the perseverance to honor You through my studies. May my efforts be a reflection of Your excellence, and may I be a light to my classmates through my integrity and dedication. Amen.
2 Corinthians 5:18-20
18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
Colossians 3:22-23
22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,
1 Thessalonians 4:11
11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you,
Mark 7:37
37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
James 1:2-4
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
Proverbs 6:6
Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
