Key Words

Key Words to help you grow!

BAPTISM
Immersion in water (Acts 8:36-38): The God-
designed way for a person to accept the grace
of God and the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38,
22:16); the submission to God and the
forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38, 22:16); the
submission to God that united a believer with
the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus
(Romans 6:1-4). It is the point at which we are
saved and added to the body (1 Peter 3:21
and 1 Corinthians 12:13).

CHURCH
The fellowship of people who have come into
Christ (Acts 2:42) and are bound together to
help and encourage one another (Hebrews
10:24-25) and make known the good news of
Jesus (Ephesians 3:10). Often referred to as
the body of Christ.

CONFESSION
Owing up to ones sin and freely
acknowledging their presence. Making no
effort to hide what was done wrong or to
rationalise it. Confession brings theblessing
of God, healing, and greater fellowship with
others (James 5:16, 1 John 1:7-10)

DISCIPLE OF JESUS
One who has totally committed his or her life
to Jesus, decided to put him first in every
situation (Matthew 10), and to make
obedience to his commands a life-long
passion (Matthew 28:19-20). One willing to be
taught and to imitate Jesus in others.

EVANGELISM
From the Greek word for good news, this
means spreading the good news and is the
mission of every disciple of Jesus (Luke
19:10, Matthew 28:18-20, 2 Corinthians 5:17-
20)

FAITH
Trusting God to do what he promised to do.
Examples: Trusting that God saves us
through Christ (Romans 3:25). Trusting that
God will work for our good in all things
(Romans 8:28). Trusting God’s plan for our
lives (Ephesians 1:11-14)

LOVE
Unconditional commitment to the good of
others (1 Corinthians 13) and that which is
shown to family, brothers and sisters in Christ,
the lost and even to enemies. Without love
our discipleship is empty (1 Corinthians 13:1-
3)

MARRIAGE
The life-long mutual commitment of a man
and woman to each other, designed by God to
bring great joy, companionship and pleasure
to the two.

PRAYER
Communication with our Father in Heaven
(Luke 11:1-4) that strengthens our relationship
with him and brings his help to our lives.

REDEMPTION
Removing someone from a state of slavery
and putting them in the state of freedom. In
our case we were delivered from slavery to
sin. (Colossians 1:14).

REPENTANCE
The act of turning in a new direction, from the
Greek metanoia (to turn the mind). For
example. When one first turns from a sinful
action (2 Corinthians 7:10-11).

GOOD WORKS
Those things that the Scriptures teach
disciples to do and to which we devote
ourselves (Ephesians 2:10, Titus 3:8) not,
however, to gain salvation, but to show
gratitude and fulfil the purpose salvation
brings (Ephesians 2:8-10).

GOSPEL
The good news that Jesus died for our sins,
was buried and was raised to life the third day
(1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

GRACE
When those who deserve nothing are treated
as if they deserved everything. This is the way
God relates to those who turn to him and put
their trust in what Christ has done for us. We
are saved by God’s grace – not by your own
works (Ephesians 2:8-10)

HEAVEN
The dwelling place for God and his angels
(Matthew 22:30, 23:9) and the eternal home
promised to all those who are saved (2
Corinthians 5:1)

HELL
Described almost exclusively by Jesus, the
place of eternal destruction for those who die
without being made right with God (Matthew
5:30; 10:28).

HOLY SPIRIT
The third person of the Godhead in our lives
in addition to the Father and the Son
(Matthew 28:19), received when one is saved
at baptism (Acts 2:38). The seal and deposit
guaranteeing our relationship with God and
future home with him (Ephesians 1:13-14).

JESUS
Saviour. Prince of Peace. Mighty God.
Wonderful Counsellor. Lord of All. The Way,
Truth and the Life. The only way to God (John
14:6)

JUSTIFICATION
God’s verdict that we who are sinners are “not
guilty” because we have put our faith in what
Jesus has done for us (Romans 3:22-26).

SCRIPTURE
Those writings inspired by God to thoroughly
equip us from every good work (2 Timothy
3:16-17). Those who wrote scripture did so as
they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2
Peter 1:20-21).

SIN
Breaking the commandments of God (1 John
3:4), knowing what is right and not doing it
(James 4:17). Any action that comes from
being self-centred and not God-centred.

THANKSGIVING
The attitude of gratitude found in disciples of
Jesus who realize that they have been saved
by grace and have God working for good in all
things in their lives (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

UNITY
God’s plan for our relationships in Christ.
Something that must be sought and
maintained with God’s help (Ephesians 4:1-6)
