MyJourney - MyJourney | The Hiking Bag
In this scripture, in what seems to be a departure from the typical narrative of this Psalm, it is as if the writer was no longer talking, but Jesus himself was speaking through David. Actually, in another version of this account, the writer says ”Behold, I come”.
In Revelations 22:12 Jesus says “Behold, I am coming soon. My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
We know it’s Jesus making his presence known way before he was ever born. Psalms 40 was written by David near the end of his life in 1015 BC. Ironically it gives more meaning to the Revelations 22:12 scripture. In a nutshell Jesus is saying that he has always existed and will always exist. So, it is not far-fetched to believe that he was in fact speaking through David in Psalms 40:7. Now the question remains what message he was trying to get to us.
Well in Romans 15:4 the Bible says ”For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”
So, we know that God was sending a message with this one. The question is what kind of message? I think we take the Bible literally when Jesus says, “I have come, it is written about me in the scroll.” It’s a prophecy that Jesus would come to us through a baby born in a manger, but also as the Word of God.
Obviously since he has been around since the beginning of time he made appearances in the Old Testament, but the bulk of Jesus' teaching comes from the New Testament. This is amazing because everyone alive today would have only received the message of salvation through the Bible, “The Scroll”. Jesus was letting us know he would come to us through the Bible. A prophecy that many of us got to experience through incredible bible studies that came through disciples of Jesus that met us. Let’s be grateful for God, his Kingdom, salvation and for the feet that brought us the good news! As we live our lives and we see the needs all around us, let’s let our light shine for God and testify about the Scroll that brought us salvation.
Will you stand for God and for the scroll when you are home with your family or will you partake in neutrality and sentimentality?
When your friends invite you to a party that you know will not be a good situation, will you say no or give in because you fear what man thinks? I believe a lot of us have our convictions straight about who is saved and who is lost, but our cowardice and fear of people will take us out and destroy the pure convictions we have.
Will you let family, your schedule, or the worries of this life cause you to compromise your convictions so that you don’t spend time with God in the morning?
The Bible describes Satan as a Lion. What does a lion do in looking for his next prey, he waits to see who is away from the pack, who is alone. And finally, who is just too weak to fight anymore. I put it before you, if you have missed more than 2 or 3 of these devotionals, you’ve fallen behind the pack.
Here is the crazy thing. Lions are so quiet, that you won’t even know you're being attacked until it’s too late. Let’s not fall out of the pack. Let’s be in front of the pack to keep a safe distance from Satan.
In Genesis 4:9, Cain says “Am I brother’s keeper?” to alleviate responsibility for his life. Let’s not be like Cain, but listen to God in Ezekiel 34 and be the good shepherds of God’s flock and call our brothers and sisters on a regular basis. Although we may not feel like it, let’s push ourselves to do what is right out of reverence for God.
Take some time and write out 2 to 3 people who you can call or text today to encourage.
Finally in Revelation 22:12, Jesus said, “I am coming soon”; we understand now after reading Psalms 40:7 that he would come to us through the Scroll of the Scriptures. And in fact, this turned out to be true for all of us who are saved baptized disciples of Jesus. And if what he said came true then we know to take him at his word when he says I am coming soon. How soon is soon? I don’t know but he describes it like a thief in the night. If we’ve ever had anything stolen from us, we feel violated and have a sense of fear that somebody was in our personal space to steal from us. That is how Jesus will come back; only the fear we fear will be the fear of a God that can destroy everything. Let’s keep that healthy fear of God alive and spend incredible time with God and read our scrolls searching for treasures yet to be found.
Ask God to help you stay faithful in the face of temptation and to walk closely with your fellow Christians to help them stay faithful.
Psalms 40:7-8
7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—it is written about me in the scroll. 8 I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.”
Revelations 22
1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. 6 The angel said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord, the God who inspires the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place.” 7 “Look, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll.” 8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. 9 But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll. Worship God!” 10 Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this scroll, because the time is near. 11 Let the one who does wrong continue to do wrong; let the vile person continue to be vile; let the one who does right continue to do right; and let the holy person continue to be holy.” 12 “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. 14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you[a] this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” 17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life. 18 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll. 20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.
Ezekiel 34
1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to you shepherds of Israel who only take care of yourselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? 3 You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. 4 You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally. 5 So they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all the wild animals. 6 My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them. 7 “‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 8 As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, because my flock lacks a shepherd and so has been plundered and has become food for all the wild animals, and because my shepherds did not search for my flock but cared for themselves rather than for my flock, 9 therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against the shepherds and will hold them accountable for my flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue my flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them. 11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. 12 As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. 13 I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land. 14 I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice. 17 “‘As for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will judge between one sheep and another, and between rams and goats. 18 Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also trample the rest of your pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink clear water? Must you also muddy the rest with your feet? 19 Must my flock feed on what you have trampled and drink what you have muddied with your feet? 20 “‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says to them: See, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21 Because you shove with flank and shoulder, butting all the weak sheep with your horns until you have driven them away, 22 I will save my flock, and they will no longer be plundered. I will judge between one sheep and another. 23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. 24 I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken. 25 “‘I will make a covenant of peace with them and rid the land of savage beasts so that they may live in the wilderness and sleep in the forests in safety. 26 I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing. 27 The trees will yield their fruit and the ground will yield its crops; the people will be secure in their land. They will know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them. 28 They will no longer be plundered by the nations, nor will wild animals devour them. They will live in safety, and no one will make them afraid. 29 I will provide for them a land renowned for its crops, and they will no longer be victims of famine in the land or bear the scorn of the nations. 30 Then they will know that I, the Lord their God, am with them and that they, the Israelites, are my people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 31 You are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
