Compass – Day 6

Devotional - Lady Wisdom

The proverbs are very clear; we are called to fight to find wisdom no matter the cost. It is worth far more than rubies. Having divine wisdom is arguably the only way you can consistently escape evil and walk down the path of righteousness!

We know well that true wisdom comes from God, (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Godly wisdom comes only from the mouth of God and equips us for every good work; this allows us to be righteous! The link between righteousness and wisdom is strong; wisdom gained through scriptures always results in personal righteousness, which adds to Godly wisdom! The key is constantly looking to the scriptures and not to "your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5).

Luckily, we have the examples of men and women in the Bible as well, whom we can imitate, relate to and learn from; one of those women being "Lady Wisdom". Solomon (the main writer of the book of Proverbs) provides a powerful description of Lady Wisdom, giving us a great example to imitate.

We all know times of our lives where all wisdom gained over the year goes out the window, especially during holidays. Going home always tests the heart and righteousness. We get tempted to begin to have weaker quiet times, to become extremely timid around our family and overall struggle being unspiritual. We begin to give Satan the victory and become like those who contrasts Lady Wisdom in the scriptures (in some cases known as Madam Folly; Proverbs 2:16-19; 5:1-14; 6:20-35), whom many of us were before we were Christians.

Wisdom provides life (Proverbs 3:18), and those who aspire to take hold of the life that is truly life, will fight to gain wisdom, not fight it off (Proverbs 5:11-14).

I encourage you to study out the characteristics of Lady Wisdom, pick three that you want to grow in and let that be your focus for a few weeks. Maybe you will want to imitate her boldness (Proverbs 8:1-4), her joy and contentment in God (Proverbs 8:30-31), and her deep heart to save and warn lost souls (Proverbs 9:1-6). Here are a few verses to focus on that will help you see her heart and look for ways to imitate it (Proverbs 1:20-33; 3:13-18; 4:5-9; 8; 1-36; 9:1-6).

Look also at the way Madam Folly contrasts and fights to not have the characteristics that she has and that the word teaches, rather be transformed and watch yourself grow!

Prayer

Ask God to help you be wise and to listen to wisdom from His word and Godly counsel in your life.

Scripture

Proverbs 3-9 (Proverbs 3:21-26)

21 My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; 22 they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. 23 Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. 24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. 25 Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, 26 for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.
